Selected Work

Filter FaceOff | Carnegie Mellon Human Computer Interaction Institute

An embedded Instagram multiplayer game where users are given humorous prompts for which they take selfies using filters available on Instagram. The prototype was developed using Figma and ↗ SparkAR.

The primary persuasive goal was to apply the psychological idea of self-discrepancy theory1 and shift the motivation behind filter and selfie use from negative reasons like adherence to a beauty standard to more positive reasons like creativity and open self-expression.

The embedded design techniques used to inform the overall persuasive strategy were Intermixing2 and Obfuscation through Misdirection3. The nature of the multiplayer game employs Social Proof4 as a strategy to encourage creativity and openness among the players.

No Time to Dine | Carnegie Mellon Electrical and Computer Engineering Department

This senior Engineering Design capstone project is a system which predicts live wait-time information of lines in campus dining halls using a combination of software and embedded hardware components.

A camera installed at the dining location captures live feed of the line, which is sampled every few seconds and run through a custom-trained ↗YOLOv7 Computer Vision algorithm on a Jetson Nano, which also hosts the SQL server with the database, to track and count the humans in line. The wait-time calculation algorithm uses this information to compute the wait time which is updated on the web application.

The web application is built on the Django web framework using Bootstrap CSS for styling and layout, and ↗D3 Javascript library for data visualization animations, with AJAX implementation for continous updates. The design features both pictorial and infographic representations of the number of people in line and the predicted wait time, with elements like the receipt-style layout appealing to the user demographic of young college students. As the frontend lead, this project for her was a fun introduction to using SVG vectors and D3 for animations.

a psychology theory that postulates that people’s behavior is motivated to reduce the self-discrepancy between the self that they actually present and the self they ought or wish to be.

Occurs whenever we change our perceptions, opinions, or behaviors to be consistent with social norms.

combining “on-topic” and “off-topic” game content in order to make the focal message or theme less obvious and more accessible.

using game genres or framing devices that direct players’ attention or expectations away from the game’s true aims.
